Shore Power Helps Ships Plug into Cleaner, Inexpensive Entergy Electricity

Posted April 26, 2021 in News

The Entergy Region contains the world’s largest port system in aggregate, giving your company access to extensive and reliable water transportation. With Shore Power, Entergy’s innovation department KeyString Labs enables ships at port to take advantage of clean, inexpensive Entergy electricity to save money and reduce emissions.

What is Shore Power?

Ships at berth typically use diesel-fueled auxiliary engines to provide the power they need. Shore power technology enables these vessels to plug into the local electricity grid and turn off engines while at dock. When using shore power, ship auxiliary systems, such as lighting, air conditioning and crew berths, are powered by the grid.

Shore power systems include a dock-mounted platform containing power metering and transformer equipment. They also require cable-management devices and vessel-side equipment to help ships connect to the system.

From system assessment to installation, Entergy will work with your company to optimize Shore Power technology. See our Shore Power process for more information.

Environmental Benefits of Shore Power

Emissions from fossil-fueled auxiliary engines can contribute significantly to air pollution. Shore power can help eliminate those emissions, helping your company reduce its environmental footprint.

“Shore power systems can be effective at significantly reducing ship pollutant emissions at dock,” according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assessment. “Under the right circumstances when a vessel is connected to shore power, overall pollutant emissions can be reduced by up to 98%.”

The environmental benefits of Entergy Shore Power stretch far beyond the dock. Entergy is recognized as an industry leader for taking bold action to address environmental issues. In 2001, we were the first U.S. electric utility to commit to voluntarily stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019, Entergy set a new emissions strategy by committing to reduce our emission intensity by 50% from our 2000 level by 2030, and just last year we committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Entergy provides reliable power generated with a diverse fuel mix, including renewables, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil-fueled engines.

Lower Operating Costs

Partnering with Entergy, and leveraging Shore Power, means that your company can reduce energy and maintenance costs. Entergy offers some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation, allowing electricity to be a cost-competitive alternative to diesel and other fossil fuels.

Using Shore Power can also reduce run-time for ship auxiliary engines, leading to less wear and tear and maintenance. Your company can save on maintenance and repair costs.

Partners in Shore Power

In 2020, Entergy and Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) partnered to build the first utility-scale shore power installation at Port Fourchon in Louisiana. The installation extends Entergy’s local distribution system to simultaneously accommodate 10 ECO marine vessels at port. The technology allows marine vessels to seamlessly transition from fossil fuel generated ship power to cleaner electric grid power.

“We’re proud to partner with Entergy Louisiana on what could become a model for ports across the world by adding value for customers and communities through significant emissions reductions,” said Dino Chouest, executive vice president of ECO. “It’s a win for everyone.”

Powering Your Business Needs

According to the EPA, shore power systems are most effective in port facilities with frequently returning vessels, such as container ships. With nine busy deepwater port facilities, the Entergy Region is a perfect fit for Shore Power.
